you're done with uni or can't stand your job, and you ask yourself, what to do? then you get to the point where you ask, where do i do it and with whom. then you come to betahaus. you walk in and notice something bubbling. betahaus is a co-working space. for us, it's normal to work in flexible teams and in a project-related way.

it's called the new way of working, but for me, it's already a standard way. you can work anywhere you are, because i only need my laptop or my iphone to access my data in the cloud. it's an old industry building on four floors. we have 200 freelancers and start-ups working on some 2,000 square metres. the most exciting part for me personally

is that people from very diverse backgrounds work together here. for instance a marketing boss of car 2 go, daimler's car sharing venture, meets a crazy creative freelancer. they talk on the same level and something is created. or, like we had at breakfast today, someone from la is visiting

and introduces their new start-up. someone will say, we have a similar idea. let's cooperate. so they get together internationally and from many different levels. they're building stuff, programming things, debate something, some investor just met a start-up and discusses possible investments. we know that this is not about desks

and internet connection. it's about who can i meet here, what content can i offer? my idea will improve if you have a look at it and give me your input. and my idea will improve if i talk openly about it and if i keep working on it with different people with different backgrounds. people often ask me if lots of ideas get stolen. i always say, no, people are here

to share their ideas and to test them on this test market and to find the first beta users. the coolest thing at betahaus is the new workshop we're building at the moment. you can have a look at our engine room. here you can produce a small series with a 10c milling machine. this is our workshop, called open design city.

here we do evening workshops where you can learn how to do 3d prints, how to do woodwork or metalwork or screen printing. the other day we had a maker weekend, which was all about... there were tons of workshops all weekend long and one of them was called tape art, and this is the result.

we also have desk areas and a cafã©. we'll surely soon have a yoga room. this is betahaus. this is the third floor. everyone is busily working away. one third of the guys have their own start-up, two thirds are freelancers of all sorts. we have a culture of helping one another. i can go to the next desk

where there is a programmer and i ask him to help me, that's normal. i go upstairs and ask my colleague who is a lawyer to have a look at this contract i'm supposed to sign. is it ok like this? he'll check for me. sometimes we have corporate guys who look at me like a purple cow

and wonder how we work here. after a couple of days at betahaus, they think that people should work exactly like this. let me show you a building site. it'll be ready next week. watch out, camera. the spirit is easy to explain. it was the founding moment a bit and it still prevails. we all came from different backgrounds.

one of us wanted to transfer what she had at university, i.e. shared studio space, to her world of work. so, very naively we moved in here, with no starting capital. we rented 250 square metres on the third floor, did our own electrics and didn't even have money for desks.

the room filled up more and more and we rented the next one. now we have 2,000 square metres, we have a haus in hamburg, one in cologne, one in sofia and one in barcelona. we're closing the one in cologne again, unfortunately, but the others are flourishing. the week after next, we're all going to barcelona. we're in a building with four floors,

roof terrace and a view of the sea. it's wicked. berlin is always the prototype. here, we test stuff. stuff that doesn't work, we won't do again, but we try to do elsewhere what works. each haus has its own identity, of course, because each city is different. our big vision is to be in all bigger cities and provide the kind of work space

we have here at betahaus. here in berlin, this has become standard. it's the city with the highest density of co-working space. i think 35 spaces in all. subtitles by stephanie geiges
