dene's tool tip challenge for today is tobuild a hat rack. a concertina hat rack. ah, it's like a bugs bunny punching device. well it fits any size wall. good. now it's all very simple, easy materials touse and fairly cheap, normal array of tools but not too many of them. and we have got some screws and nuts and bolts. set the mitre saw stop to 280mm and cut thelonger cross frames 2 at a time.

reset the mitre saw at 160mm and cut 4 endframe pieces. using a piece of waste material, mark themitres. then cut the end of the cross frames in groupof 5. so just let gravity do it's job and it fallson the floor. don't put too much down pressure on the mitresaw or you will skew the cut. how does that look? that looks very good actually. and you can just give those a sand off butfirst you gotta do the other end. oh, ok.

then we gently sand the frames measure and cut the dowel. now 6 at 80 and 6 at 40. so that's 6 of those, now we gotta reset itto 40 do we. correct. make up your mind 40 or correct. that's all the dowels cut, good that's great. now we have got to measure and mark the 3holes in the long frames. so we are at 280 so 140 should be about thecentre shouldn't it.

140 is gotta be the centre. it's 40mm. 40 so we're sorta... we mark the position of the holes in the crossframes. 20 in from the end. yep. in theory, that's dead spot. and same at the other end. so having measured this and it's importantyou get this first one right cos' you use

it as a template for the others. the important thing is the distance betweenthe holes is equal. and that's how it works as a concertina. so you clamp it on the end.. then clamp the cross frames in 2 groups of5. drill using the marked piece as a guide. using the long cross piece that you marked, again you clamp it matching up the ends of the shorter cross frames and then you usethat as a template so all your holes have to work as an axis point.

well they are all done. now, all we have got to do is put a hole, drill a hole in the end of our dowels. alright, we'll just make sure that's straightup and down. when drilling the dowel holes, use the 16mmwasher as a guide to find the centre of the dowel. make sure the drill is square to the job soyour holes are straight. we then place a washer on each bolt and securein the centre position of each of the frames. then all you do is line them up in a criss crosspattern on the bench, drag them to the edge and then you can put the screws up with thewashers on through the bottom and the pegs

on the top. can't you. the longer row of pegs or dowels form thetop of the hat rack with the shorter pegs on the bottom. well all good things must come to an end andthat's what these short bit are for so they go on next. turn the rack around and repeat the same withthe smaller pegs on the other side. our simple hat rack can then be set to anysize you like and fix to the wall. does it work?

sounds like it. very good. that's great actually, you have done a terrificjob there dene. ah, you would have to call that a hat trick.
